James Madison (1751-1836), the fourth president of the United States of America, was a pivotal figure in the creation of the US Constitution. Between the Annapolis Convention in 1786 and the Philadelphia Convention in 1787, Madison dove into the history of government, studying the republics of antiquity and what was at that time cutting edge political theory. All this he did to develop coherent, informed ideas about what a new frame of government for America should look like. For Madison, the constitutional moment of 1786-1787 was a critical fork in the road that would either see an end of the Revolutionary ideals or the birth of a glorious new American Republic.
