Veteran’s Day and Service to the Republic
Share
Veteran’s Day is a reminder of what it means to serve something bigger than ourselves. While we pause to honor those who wore the uniform, the day also invites us to think about the deeper idea behind their sacrifice: a republic survives only when its citizens are willing to give, not just take.
The Framers had a word for this: virtue. Not perfection, but a habit of putting the common good ahead of personal interest. Veterans embody that principle in the most visible way, but the health of a free nation depends on all of us practicing it in everyday life. Casting a vote, showing up for a neighbor, engaging in honest dialogue; these are all acts of civic service that keep liberty alive.
So, as we thank those who served, let’s take the hint. You don’t need a uniform to serve the Republic. You just need a commitment to something bigger than yourself – and the willingness to act on it.
Long Live the Republic
